Christmas is a time of reflection, not only on the birth of the Savior, but on the journey we’ve traveled over the last twelve months. Certainly, it’s been a year of ups and downs, but we have so much to be thankful for.
If we were to sketch a visual timeline, marking joyous occasions as peaks and painful trials as valleys, it would provide us a picture of the steady hand of God guiding us through it all. No matter what heights we reach or depths we encounter, His steadfast love keeps us tethered to the timeline of His strength and provision. As Joshua 1:9 says, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Courage is a command, empowered by God Himself. His holy presence equips us to travel uncharted territory, speak the truth in love, and stand against resistance.
Even the events surrounding Jesus’ birth required great courage:
- As Mary bravely received the angel’s news, saying, “May your word to me be fulfilled.” (Luke 1:38)
- As the wise men followed the star, in search of the Christ Child. (Matthew 2:1-2)
- As the same wise men dismissed Herod’s demands and took another route home. (Matthew 2:12).

Courage is the catalyst that moves us forward when we’d rather retreat. It keeps us on mission and on course. It compels us to keep serving our Jewish brothers and sisters with unwavering love and support. As Paul said, “Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong. And do everything with love.” (1 Corinthians 16:13-14) This defines our journey, both past and present.
This Christmas, let’s reflect on the infinite timeline of God’s love, for it is the foundation on which we stand. With hearts unafraid, minds undistracted, and our mission undeterred, let’s be lights of courage in this dark world.
As we step boldly into the New Year, may our response be like Mary’s, full of faith and belief. Like the inspired shepherds, may we spread the Good News of the Gospel, telling everyone about the King of Kings. And like the magi from the east, who followed the star to the Bethlehem, may we follow Jesus, the Bright Morning Star. (Revelation 22:16)
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,
Jennifer
